Progress Update 2

I think I was finally able to narrow down my concept. While thinking about abandoned things, I began to think about why it is that happens and how there are often memories and experiences that are tied to the objects that lay forgotten. I think I want to tap into that idea a bit more and maybe explore the ways in which this image could be more personal.

I decided to explore more of a landscape composition today and began by masking out the toy truck. I decided that the bed of the truck provided the perfect spot to act as a vase for the flowers since I feel like the dying flowers provide a really interesting moment of symbolism. I also found a photo I took for a different class that I thought would fit perfectly since it is both rustic and nostalgic. I added it in as a background and masked out the soccer ball. I really like the inclusion of the soccer ball as a personal element since I used to play soccer a lot when I was in elementary school but have not touched a soccer ball since.

Next, I decided to add additional personal elements. I found some old photos that I felt fit well with the direction I was going in, including one of my playing soccer as a child. Lastly, I combined some subtle type from a note I had from a previous teacher and a speech I wrote that I decided to add in to continue the personal elements. I used one of the photos of wood to blend and adjust the colors of the piece as a whole to give it more of a nostalgic feel. I think overall, I am very happy with this image but there is still some other directions I want to explore further.

  1. I really enjoy the cohesive warmth of the image you are building. It's well put together and reminds me of scrapbooking.

  2. I agree with Sylvia, I love the warmth not only represented in colors and textures, but in objects and context! You've got a beautiful collection of objects, shapes, colors and contrasts.

  3. Ugh, I love how these abandoned items are coming together. The warm tones, to me, relay an affectionate air for what these objects may have once meant to you. How you're approaching the concept, too, makes me immediately ponder on my own childhood items, and what they mean to me now.

  4. I loved watching your ideas progress and come together as you figured out what you wanted to do! I love this concept. I think at the beginning it was looking more "photo"-like, as Ed likes to say, but you really curated it into becoming its own image, with its own meaning and statement.
